Clix is the newest addition to New Zealand DVD rental, launching in 2007 to cater to the adult niche market along with a boutique selection of mainstream films. We've never seen this approach taken in the English-speaking world--companies tend to either be mainstream with some adult titles, or adult only--have a look at their mainstream titles (all fairly recent releases) to see if their taste matches your, and you could get a good combined deal out this company. With the closure of the rival DVD X service, Clix is now the only adult-only DVD rental service in New Zealand.
Their website looks fresh, though it could do with more genres, with only 8 adult ones listed, as well as another 6 mainstream genres. These can help browsing dramatically. Likewise, they would really benefit from some favorites lists, things to filter the wheat from the chaff, Clix Picks, Customer Picks, New Releases, things along those lines. But then again, the site is brand new, and the site will undoubtedly evolve along those lines as customers make suggestions. We do particularly like their Advanced Search function which is better than some of the mainstream DVD rental companies, with fields for Movie Title, Star, Director, Genre, Year of Release, and even Keyword from the synopsis.
The actual title information appears a bit terse at first--picture, title, short synopsis, customer star rating. But when you click the "read more" button, you also get length, year, cast, format, language, sound/aspect formats, and even subtitles, as well as country and studio. And the stars are actually hyperlinked, so with a click you can see what other films they've been in.
Clix also has more excellent features seen only on larger mainstream companies; for instance, if you are going on holiday or away on business you can freeze your account up to twice a year, for no more than 60 days in total. No movies will be sent to you and you will not be charged during that period, but all movies must be returned before the freeze takes effect.
Unfortunately, they do not have a customer service phone line. They do have multiple email contacts for various problems as well as an email contact form.
Again, our main reservation is we haven't seen much feedback on the service in online forums or the blogosphere as it's so new, and the service essentially remains untested, but from examining the site design alone, Clix appears to gave great potential.
Prices: Clix has a 14-day free trial. Clix has two unlimited subscription plans and all are cheaper than what you'd pay at a mainstream rental company: 2 discs out at a time for $26.00 per month or 3 discs for $35.00.
In their terms and conditions, they mention a discounted annual membership, though do not provide details. This may be an excellent idea if you try and like the service, though we'd perhaps wait a bit to see how the company fares before making such a large commitment so soon after startup.
