DVD X has gone out of business, but we're keeping this review as it was for posterity.
DVDX is a well-designed specialist adult rental service which delivers as advertised, though as you'd expect, its features aren't quite as extensive as the three mainstream companies. DVDX is owned and operated by ISIS Corporation Limited, and since 2005 has aimed to provide the largest selection of adult DVDs in New Zealand, without any embarrassing queuing at video stores. Naturally, deliveries are in discreet, plain white envelopes, and credit card charges are in the name of ISIS Corporation.
DVDX has a well-designed website, with 10 adult genres, as well as things like Best Picks, Members Recommendation, and the odd promotion and special. The actual title information appears a bit terse at first--picture, title, short synopsis, customer star rating. But when you click the "read more" button, you also get length, year, cast, director, zone, and number of discs displayed. The director and cast should really be hyperlinked so you can click through to see what else they've been up to, but this isn't a major deficiency, as they have an Advanced Search option with separate field for title/synopsis, Director, Cast Member, or Studio.
Unlike two of the three mainstream DVD rental companies, DVDX does not have a customer service phone line, and only allows contact through an online email form. Though to their credit, they email you both when they send a disc to you, and when they receive it. They do not mail on weekends or public holidays.
We haven't seen much feedback on the service in online forums or the blogosphere, but given they've been around since 2005, there probably shouldn't be any major service issues or they wouldn't still be around. There are a few arbitrary Terms and Conditions issues (mentioned below) potential subscribers should be aware of, but otherwise, looks like a good company to give whirl if you're into adult DVDs.
Prices: There is no free trial, instead they have a special offer--if you pay for the first month, you get the second month free (much better than their normal initial offer of $7.95 for the first month at the 2 DVD out level.) DVDX has three unlimited subscription plans and all are cheaper than what you'd pay at a mainstream rental company: 2 discs out at a time for $24.95 per month, 4 discs for $45.95, and 6 discs for $56.95. Note, according to their FAQ, you must have all your discs back with them before you hit the Cancel button or you will be charged--really should allow you until the end of your subscription month, or a week afterwards, an approach most other companies take, so be wary when canceling. We'd suggest you tae all the films out of your queue, mail the films back (with proof of mailing just in case), wait for email receipt acknowledgement, and then click Cancel, just in case.
Note that unlike most companies, in their FAQ they state that if you keep a title for two months, they'll assume you want to purchase it and will charge you--granted, it's not in anyone's interest to keep a film so long on an unlimited plan, but this does seem a bit heavy-handed, presumably they'd email you to ask first, but this is unclear from the FAQ.
They also have a casual, pay-per-rent plan where you simply pay $8 per rental, up to a week out ($1 per day charges after that).
